Three things I wish someone had told me

before I became a TCOM major

Statements about academics

Plan your time at school and in your course of study wisely.

Get as much done as possible in the beginning and middle, so you are not killing yourself at the end.

Take classes that interest you and you will do better

Don't rely on advisors. Know what you need.

I wish someone had told me how much work would be involved. I knew there would be more than in high school, but the initial amount shocked me

Teachers do not always care about your attendance, but it is still important to show up.

Keep your grades up, because it is harder to raise you GPA once you are a senior.

Keep everything that you do (projects) because you will need them in Capstone.

Don't be afraid to ask questions.

It would have been helpful to know that there are lots of people willing to assist you with about anything you need.

I would have liked to have someone tell me about the importance of getting ahead in your work. If you get just a little bit behind, it buries you and you have to work really hard to get out. It is much different than high school.

Although college is full of making new friends and socializing; don't get carried away! Going out 4 times a week won't result in anything but bad grades. College is the beginning of your professional life: treat it as such.

Study, Study, Study! Flash cards are your friends! Someone is paying for your education. Study hard before anything else.

Statements about involvement/experience

That I'd have so many opportunities in college to get involved.

Get as much hands on experience as you can, even if it is outside the classroom.

Get experience in your field before you graduate.

Get involved as much as you can.

It would have been important to know how important it was going to be to work in your field during college.

Get out of your dorm room and get involved.

Join an organization/ sorority etc.

You need to participate in extra curricular TCOM things like Homework Express in order to really learn useful hands on techniques.

Statements about the field of Telecommunications/etc

The average pay after graduating in the Telecommunications field and the job outlook.

About related fields like advertising, marking and journalism.

Make as many connections as you can before you graduate.

How expansive the field is.

You should know exactly what you want to do in the telecommunication field.

That when you get a job the pay is not great.

Be ready for life, because it does not stop because you are in college.

Statements about time

That time would fly by so fast with all of the classes I'd be taking.

The time will fly.

Be careful how you spend your time and money.

No one can waste your time without your consent.
